New Confucius Institute for the University of New South Wales, Sydney

One of the China’s most prestigious universities will partner the University of New South Wales to boost Australia’s academic and business engagement with China.

The influential Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been selected as the Chinese partner for UNSW for the establishment of a new Confucius Institute on the UNSW Kensington campus in Sydney. UNSW hosts Australia’s largest Chinese language program and the new Institute will open important doors to Australian academics and students in China, as well as enhance Chinese language training for business and the wider Australian community.

A growing worldwide network of Confucius Institutes promotes Chinese language and cultural studies, much like the French government’s Alliance Francaise or Germany’s Goethe Institutes. UNSW joins universities such as the London School of Economics, London University, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Rutgers University in hosting a Confucius Institute.

UNSW Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Richard Henry, formally signed the agreement in Beijing on Tuesday (Dec 11) in the Great Hall of the People. The Chinese government funded Confucius Institutes provide a range of support for Chinese language and cultural studies. Two academics from Shanghai Jiao Tong will be based at the Confucius Institute at UNSW. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is well known for its expertise in science, technology and engineering and its influential annual research rankings of the world’s universities.

“This new Confucius Institute at UNSW reflects Australia’s importance to China and it is especially significant that a university of the calibre of Shanghai Jiao Tong has been chosen as our partner,” says UNSW Pro Vice Chancellor (International), Jennie Lang.

The UNSW-based Confucius Institute is the fourth in Australia, following the University of Western Australia, Adelaide University and the University of Melbourne. About 170 Confucius Institutes have now been established worldwide, mainly in the United States and Europe. The Institutes are named after the Chinese philosopher born in 551bc, whose thoughts on virtue, propriety, benevolence, and good behaviour, are the building blocks of Chinese society.

“This considerable investment in Australia reflects both the growing demand for Chinese language and business skills here and the increasing importance of the link between the two nations, especially as China is now Australia’s biggest trading partner,” says Ms Lang.

Professor Richard Henry will chair the management committee of the Confucius Institute at UNSW. It will operate separately from the university and will be open to the public and business sector. However, the additional expertise and teaching assistance the Institutes offers, as well as the new links to Shanghai Jiao Tong, will complement UNSW’s large Chinese studies program.
